ÜberTwitter beefs up BlackBerry Twitter experience

Okay, so maybe I’ve badmouthed Twitter in the past. And maybe I just signed up for my own account, making me the biggest Twittocrite (see what I did there?) ever. Still, I’m going to embrace the damned thing, which means a mention today of a new Blackberry Twitter client: ÜberTwitter. Not only is Über an awesome word, but this looks to be a pretty awesome Twitter client. It uses a number of location- and media-based features to stand out from the pack. After the jump, we’ll go over some of the neat-o features.

Announcing your location is optional, but if you so choose you can broadcast your coordinates (or your “20″ as my friends like to say) to your followers. It uses local towers rather than internal GPS, so you don’t have to worry about Verizon having the feature on lockdown. This feature lets you see people who are tweeting near you, so you can find them and have an actual face-to-face conversation.

Media features include embedding videos in your tweet. While this is cool in a way, doesn’t it run anathema to Twitter? You’re supposed to express yourself in 140 characters, right? Isn’t adding video just making this a social networking forum rather than a place you can connect with friends and bounce ideas off of them? You can also upload pictures to a site, but it appears that’s for ÜberTwitter users, not the general twitting public.

One last feature: you can automatically update your Google Talk status with your latest tweet. It’s a small consideration, but considering all the people I know on Google Talk, it’s a decently attractive feature.

The application runs on BlackBerry devices with OS 4.2.1 and up, including the Storm. You can point your BlackBerry browser to http://www.ubertwitter.com/bb/download.php and get it OTA. Thanks to Robb for pointing it out.
